Cheryl's Story

I didn't graduate from AVHS. Truth is I never even attended AVHS. I did attend 1 semester of AVJH in 1973 and I attended Mariana Elementary School during 4th, 5th, & 6th grades. (1970 - 1973). This was the longest amount of time I ever spent in one school. Before that the longest time at one school was no more than 4 months. After that I did go to a couple of schools where I actually completed a semester in the same school that I had started it in. So the reason I looked up the AVHS class of '79' is because I am curious about whatever happened to those kids that I went to school with.I was very shy, quiet, & socially awkward, as a result of always having been "The New Kid". I believe the kids thought I was odd, a misfit to be sure. I was painfully shy and extremely self conscience.I doubt that any of them even remember me with maybe 1 exception...Nancy Lea Sirk...I went to visit her a few years later when I was in the area visiting my grandparents. She was very gracious and kind to invite me in and visit just as though it was perfectly natural to have the class oddball show up at your door years later, uninvited and unexpected. Thank you Lea, for being the warm person that you were, I can't tell you how genuinely happy and good I felt after visiting with you. These are the kids I remember going to school with for three years...Lea Sirk, Patty Mac Claine, Carolle Bader whose bff was Tammy Smith, Nelson Smith best friends with Willie White ,Kim Robinson bff of Linda who's brother Tom was bf w/ Richard Sumner. Then Mike Reese and his side kick Paul (whose last name I knew as well as my own unt about 10 yrs. ago) ( too many nights partying + old age = do I kno you? lol) those two were the class clowns & made us smile and laugh at their antics when they would "disrupt the class" Thanks guys for all the yawns you replaced with grins. Karie Tatro..another misfit, I apologize for not being nicer to you, I should have befriended you or at least tried, but I wanted to be accepted so much and I was afraid that to be friends with you would seal my fate when in fact I never did anything else to fit in other than not befriending you. Rusty, Glenda, Wally, Robert Hicks, Mr. Barrington, Mr. Mitchell , Ms. Day with her harpsichord, Mrs Port whose husband was MIA in Vietnam and who tried to motivate us and make us politically aware when Nixon was running for re-election on the platform of bringing our boys in Vietnam back home and ending the draft. I hope that hers was one of the men who did came home alive and whole. I have some great memories of all of you and our school, especially 6th grade, that was great...The field trip to Wrightwood for the week-end. The boys scaring the girls with Bigfoot stories and then making noises outside the girls cabin right before cutting the lights to our cabin and busting through the door...lol...remember the 1st morning when we woke up and found the Bigfoot foot prints they had placed all around our cabin the night before using a plaster mold and making growling and thumping noises while doing it. Naughty boys. For some reason I bet Mike and Paul were probably the masterminds behind the two day prank. And I remember we split up into 3 groups to hike / ra...Expand for more
ce to the ski lifts. I was with Mrs. Ports group. we never made it to the lifts, we got lost and wandered around for hours until we finally found a road and hitched a ride back to camp in the back of a pick up with... was it nuns? I remember Ms. Day loved to have us run laps every chance she could, Mr. Mitchell loved German Dodge ball as did Ms. Day. Not my favorite teachers and not my fav activities then or now. The pottery wheels and the kiln were great. The animals in cages outside Mrs Ports room were cool. The talent show was both terrifing for a shy kid and alot of laughs. We were all so cool when we preformed The Age of Aquarius from Hair..or so we thought.. lol.. I could go on but I won't. I just wanted to say you were a great bunch of kids and when I remember that part of my life it always makes me smile. I hope you conquered the world outside of those walls and didn't let it beat you down. And I hope life has been good to you. I went back and visited our school about 3 years ago and was amazed at how small it really was. The drinking fountains, bathrooms, hallways and classrooms, hell even the cafeteria had shrunk. Were we ever really that small?...I remember it as being much, much bigger. It was so long ago yet in my heart it will always be yesterday. BACK TO THE PRESENT I married in my junior year of high school..I have been married to the same wonderful man for 35 yrs. (OMG I don't feel that old ) We had 9 children ages 35 to 11 yrs. Now we have 8. We also have 10 grandchildren ages 17 to 1yr. After I got married I was finally able to settle down and stay in one place. We have lived in 3 homes in the last 35 yrs. I made sure my kids didn't have to be the new kids every couple of months and they went all through school and graduated with a lot of the same kids they started school with in Headstart. As a result none of my children are the least bit shy or socially awkward. They have always been self confident and outspoken...even the quiet ones. Luckily when I was about 15 or 16 I came out of my shell and lost any signs of ever being shy or quiet. My children think I am pulling their leg when I tell them how I used to be. My step-father has passed on and last year my mother bought a home in Adelanto. Her first time not renting. I go up on the week-ends to visit her and give her a hand. Last month we decided to buy a home up there in the desert. My mom gave us her realtors name and # and one day while he was showing me homes I ask if he had any in the Mariana school area. He ask why Mariana and I told him I went there and it was a great experience, it would be kinda cool to have my youngest enrolled. I found out that he also attended Mariana a couple of years behind me. I guess that is what has got me started with this whole classmates story. Its been 3 yrs. Since I first wrote the above. Today I added another grandchild to the list and updated the ages. We did buy a home in Adelanto about a month after I wrote that. Unfortunately I could not find a home that I liked in the Marianna School area. But I love our new home! It is beautiful and just a mile down the road from my mother. We have been blessed. OK so that is my story for what its worth.
